Our Department:

• We have 33 theatres across 3 sites: Main theatre at University Hospital, Day Surgery unit at the Hospital of St Cross

• As a level ONE Major trauma Centre we take Polytrauma patients from around the region

• We perform state of the art Robotic surgery for the previously inoperable

• We are a regional centre for neurosurgery

• We specialise in Cardiac and Renal transplant surgery

• We provide 24/7 Emergency and Trauma surgery

• Other specialties include Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Ear Nose and Throat, Maxillo Facial, Urology, Colorectal, Vascular, Ophthalmology, Plastics, Breast

Our Roles:

Scrub

Should you choose to be a scrub practitioner you will learn how to interpret a theatre list prepare the correct instruments for a case and support the surgeon during the procedure.

Recovery

Should you choose to work in our Recovery / Post Anaesthetic care unit, you will be providing 1-2-1 care for patients as they are recovering from their surgery and anaesthetic. Some of our patients require higher levels of care and stay with us over night in our Overnight Intensive recovery Unit and you will be trained to provide the higher level care these patients require.

Anaesthetics

For those of you with an anaesthetic qualification (ODP or anaesthetic nurse) you may choose to come and join us as an anaesthetic practitioner.From working in the fast paced day surgery unit to working in main theatres for larger complicated cases, we offer all types of anaesthesia, for all types of patients. We also provide anaesthetic cover for outreach departments such as ECT, CRM, and Cath Lab.

As a new member of staff working in Theatres, you will be offered the following support:

• A supernummery period to work with various members of the theatre team

• A mentor (+/- preceptor) to support you, set department objectives and personal objectives

• Opportunity to complete competences in extended roles

• Support from the Theatre Clinical Education Team

• Competency workbooks which is transferable between specialties in theatre
