Renal Services

Renal Services provide an international renowned in-patient and out-patient care delivery service for patients with Chronic Kidney Disease and Acute Kidney Injury.

Our Department:

  • Ward 50 – 22 beds for patients with renal impairment
  • Haemodialysis - 400 patients receiving 4 hour haemodialysis treatment three times a week throughout the Coventry & Warwickshire area. We have a 30 station unit based at UHCW and 4 satellite units covering 50 stations between them
  • Peritoneal Dialysis Unit - 64 patients trained in-centre to undertake peritoneal dialysis at home
  • Home Care team - 16 patients trained in-centre to undertake haemodialysis at home
  • Day care unit for day unit procedures - Procedures are booked in as a day case for example, kidney and liver biopsies, vascular catheter insertions, arteriovenous fistula creations/revisions, blood transfusions, intravenous infusions to name a few.  
  • Renal Nurse Specialist – Manages a caseload of over 1200 chronic pre- dialysis patients including conservative/supportive care, nurse led clinics/patient education and offering a child to adult transitional programme.
  • Transplantation - approximately 60 live donor/cadaveric transplants are undertaken per year. Patients are managed pre and post transplantation
