Maternity & Gynaecology


The maternity unit at UHCW, offers an award winning service where you will be given the opportunity to be part of an innovative and forward thinking team.Following the Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection in March 2015, maternity services were rated as ‘Good’ and UHCW was rated amongst the top 20 trusts for many responses within the survey – Women’s experiences of Maternity Care 2015.

We support approximately 6200 births. Intrapartum care is provided in the community setting, the midwifery led Lucina birth centre and the obstetric led labour ward. The population of Coventry and Warwickshire is complex and diverse which will provide you with a variety of experiences on a daily basis. The maternity service operates across Coventry and Rugby.

Nurses and Midwives have the opportunity to work rotationally in the following areas:

  • Labour Ward, Maternity Triage
  • Lucina Birth Centre
  • 2 maternity inpatient wards = 54 beds
  • Maternity ultrasound, antenatal clinic
  • Community Midwifery service across Coventry & Warwickshire
  • Tommy’s Miscarriage Specialist centre
  • Gynaecology Outpatients
  • 12 bedded gynaecology inpatient ward
  • Emergency Gynae Unit, Early Pregnancy Unit
  • Centre for reproductive medicine
  • Gynaecology/ Oncology Services

Midwives are actively encouraged to expand their skills, knowledge and competencies following qualification and there is a strong preceptorship package to support this. There are currently 18 supervisors of midwives in post, providing support and guidance to both the midwives and families of Coventry and Rugby.

The maternity service works alongside Coventry University to provide continual professional development opportunities in programmes such as the Newborn Initial Physical Examination (NIPE) programme, Mentors and Assessors module and Return to Midwifery Practice. There are also opportunities to work alongside the maternity risk manager, bereavement midwife, infant feeding specialist, screening midwife and maternity specific practice facilitator.
